About Billingham Site

The Billingham Site is an integrated production and storage facility, manufacturing primarily ammonia, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate. The site is at the heart of the Teesside Chemical Industry and has many close links with neighbouring chemical companies where ammonia and nitric acid are key raw materials.

Ammonia was first produced at Billingham in the 1920's using the classic Haber Process. Since then the Site has seen many changes. Since 1998 many millions of pounds have been spent updating the production facilities so that the site can compete with other ammonia plants around the world. The workforce constantly looks for ways to improve the sites productivity. With their innovation and investment the ammonia, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plants have all set new production records.

Billingham has its own laboratory where products are tested at many stages of manufacture to ensure they meet specifications before being released for sale. The laboratory also monitors site activities to ensure that strict environmental agreements are met with regard to effluent.

Site Location

As mentioned above the site is located at the heart of the Tees Valley chemical cluster. Originally chosen for its many geographical advantages, it has all the necessary transport links. There is easy access to major roads and rail network. It also has its own wharf on the River Tees where raw materials can be imported and its fertilisers exported to the rest of the world.

The site has the following accreditations: Environmental standard ISO 14001, Occupational Health and Safety Standard OHSAS 18000, Quality ISO9001:2000 and Kosher certification for the ammonia plant.

Biodiversity

Although the Billingham Site is primarily a chemical manufacturing site there is a wide variety of flora, fauna and wildlife that thrive there. To help encourage the biodiversity GrowHow with the assistance of INCA has created a wildflower meadow and pond.
